About Primitivo di Manduria

Produced in Italy’s hot southern Mediterranean, Primitivo is one of the country’s best-known wines. Primitivo di Manduria is produced in the region of Puglia (Apulia), in the town of Manduria (province Taranta) with a DOC classification. The dark black-skinned Primitivo grape is characterized by high levels of sugar. The same grape grows in California, where it is known as Zinfandel, and is said to have originated on the Dalmatian coast.

In Italy, the name “primitivo” is traced back to the mid 1700’s, with religious documents referring to the “primaticcio” as a grapevine that matured before all others.

To meet classification standards, Primitivo wines must have at least 13.5% alcohol content and be made with at least 85% of the Primitivo grape. Primitivo di Manduria DOC must use 100%.  The high alcohol content is an attraction for some; it has been referred to as a “fruit-bomb.” The aromatic flavours of the Primitivo di Manduria make it most appealing. It is fruity with hints of cherry, along with some spiciness and hints of Mediterranean vegetation. Oak barrel aging softens the strong tannin of the wine.  This dry full-bodied wine is excellent with strongly flavoured dishes and cheeses.
